Comments: We arrived at the Black Mesa trailhead at about 3 a.m. on Wednesday, the 21st. It was a chilly night, but since it was perfectly clear, we laid outside in the desert and watched the stars for over an hour. At about 4:30 a.m., we decided that we weren't going to sleep anyways, so we once again departed for a hike in the darkness of night. The sun rose about an hour later as we were making our way between the mesas, looking out for rattlesnakes that the highpointing books warned us about. Once we were on top of Black Mesa, we had to hike mile across the plateau to the actual highpoint. There was a very cool monument at the top, and we spent over an hour at the top, as we took several pictures and JO hiked over to the other side of the Mesa. We got back to the truck later in the morning, and took off south towards Guadalupe Peak.

We drove through northern Texas, and then cut southwest into New Mexico, and we ended up reaching Roswell at dinnertime. We decided to crash in Roswell for the night, but by the time we got there, the UFO museum had already closed. A tourist guide talked about some lakes in a park that we drove around trying to find, in vain. We decided to call it a night and, first thing in the morning, took off for Guadalupe Peak.
